36 King William Road has had many incarnations: from private residence to patisserie, cafe to corner store. After a complete restoration and redevelopment, Mantra on King William opened in November 2007.
Mantra on King William is the brain-child of school friends Ben Warren and Karl Kirsten, the development of the restaurant has been a labour of love, culminating in the grand opening on 28 November. Throughout the process Ben and Karl took as their mantra the ideal of nourishment and hospitality. A vision realised, the small rooms have been opened to create a light and modern space, taking advantage of 10 foot ceilings and original fireplaces. The antique tables are spacious, contrasting with the minimalist chairs and contemporary art. The immediate focal point of the dining room is the long bar created from Gawler River red gum. Measuring five metres and designed by craftsman We Can, the wood came from a single tree and took two weeks to construct South of the dining room is the courtyard, a perfect place to enjoy warm South Australian weather under the umbrellas.
A highlight of the Mantra on King William is the gabion wall, which has been constructed from original stone reclaimed from the interior of the building. We encourage an interactive and wholesome dining experience through the sharing of dishes. To begin, a selection of traditional tapas-style plates, perfect also as a starter or with a glass of wine. The option is offered of either a traditional a la carte meal or to build a meal through shared starters and maincourses. Influenced by the flavours of Spain and the Mediterranean, the menu changes regularly in response to the seasonal availability of produce. The attached menu is thus an indication of the style of food that we serve.
Our chefs at the Mantra on King William are Adrian Peek, David Hooper, Sarah Swain, Michelle Rodgers and Adrian Breschi and they are happy to cater for guests with special dietary requirements with advance notice and we endeavour to include some options for vegetarians on the regular menu.
We look forward to seeing you here at the Mantra on King William.
